A New Brunswick business, Floyd’s Appliance Centre in Hampton, N.B., has been serving the community since 1946. The store offers a variety of appliances, including refrigerators, stove tops, washing machines for both dishes and clothes, and other large electronics commonly found in Canadian homes. The store aims to keep prices affordable for customers.
Rebekha Bradley, the sales and social media manager, states that while they can’t control all costs, they will adapt to price increases. On Tuesday, Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs of 25% on over $27 billion worth of U.S. goods, including large appliances like fridges, washing machines, and ovens. Bradley notes that only 18% of GE appliances in stock are U.S.-made, and GE has shifted manufacturing to Mexico due to lower costs.
American appliances are often more expensive than Canadian or Mexican alternatives. Floyd’s has stockpiled some U.S.-made products to avoid price hikes, ensuring current stock remains at listed prices until tariffs are lifted. Suppliers have confirmed that goods shipped before Tuesday will not incur the additional tax.
The duration of the tariffs remains uncertain due to lack of formal talks between Canada and the U.S.
